Boskoopse PUNKer

The term pale ale originally denoted an ale that had been brewed from pale malt. One such variety of beer was October beer, a pale well-hopped brew popular among the landed classes, who brewed it domestically; once brewed it was intended to cellar two years.

Among the first brewers known to export beer to India was the Bow Brewery, on the Middlesex-Essex border. Bow Brewery beers became popular among East India Company traders in the late 18th century because of the brewery's location and its owner's liberal credit line of 18 months. Ships transported Bow Brewery's beers to India, among them it's October beer, which benefited exceptionally from conditions of the voyage and was apparently highly regarded among its consumers in India and clearly influenced the India pale ales.

Early IPA was only slightly higher in alcohol than most beer brewed in his day and would not have been considered a strong ale; however, a greater proportion of the wort was well-fermented, leaving behind few residual sugars, and the beer was strongly hopped. The common story that early IPAs were much stronger than other beers of the time, however, is a myth. While IPA's were formulated to survive long voyages by sea better than other styles of the time, porter was also shipped to India and California successfully. It is clear that by the 1860s, India pale ales were widely brewed in England, and that they were much more attenuated and highly hopped than porters and many other ales.

Demand for the export style of pale ale, which had become known as India pale ale, developed in England around 1840 and India pale ale became a popular product in England. American, Australian, and Canadian brewers manufactured beer with the label IPA before 1900, and records suggest that these beers were similar to English IPA of the era, however each benifiting from the unique local hops.

One of the famous IPA's is BrewDog's flagship beer: Punk IPA. The Scottish brewer BrewDog was founded in Fraserburgh in 2007 by James Watt and Martin Dickie, moving to nearby Ellon in 2012, where it is producing about 120,000 bottles per month.

In 2010, BrewDog opened their first bar, in nearby Aberdeen. A second bar opened in 2011 in Edinburgh followed by a third in Glasgow and another in Camden Town, London. Further bars opened in Nottingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham in 2012 and in Leeds, Stockholm and Shepherd's Bush, London in 2013. In 2014, BrewDog opened bars in São Paulo, Brazil, Dundee in Scotland, Florence, Italy and Helsinki, Finland.

Boskoopse PUNKer is an imitation of the Brewdog's PUNK IPA, an extreme IPA with a very high dose of dry-hopping and a twist of Cayene pepper. But now more than a PUNK, and therefor called a PUNKer, with maybe something more extreme planned: a PUNKest.

The nose is loaded with the New Zealand and American hops, the first gulp giving you the freshness and tinteling sensation of a typical IPA. But then the hops kick your taste buds in overtime, where the light smokeyness results in a full body. The after-taste is lovely hop-fresh, until the cayenne pepper gives you a light but pleasant sensation. A full-body fresh IPA with a (spicy) twist.

The second batch (006) has been brwed especially for the home-brew tasting evening of PINT's Mijn Zwager en Ik in Gouda in November 2015.
The fourth batch (014) is an Amerillo-hop version due to lack of Simcoe hop.

Recommended drinking temperature: 7...12 oC

In batch 014 the Simcoe hop has been replaced by Amerillo, due to unavailability
The fifth batch (019) is an special edition brewed especially for the Dutch Nash Hash 2018
The sixth batch (028) from 2019 has been brewed with Wakatu hop due to unavailability of Nelson Sauvin and Simcoe
